Hate crime is an act of violence or hostility that is directed at a person or group because of who they are or what they think they are, and it can come in many different forms such as physical attacks, a threat of attack and verbal abuse or insults.

The aim of the session is:

  • To provide information, resources and learning experiences to raise awareness of hate incidents/ crimes.

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Recognise the difference between hate incidents and hate crime.
  • Recognise the different kinds of hate incidents and crime.
  • Analyse case studies to identify appropriate responses to hate crime or incidents.
  • Signpost victims to support organisations.
  • Explore different ways to effectively challenge hate and prejudice.

Strands of hate currently recognised in Greater Manchester include race, religion, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, and alternative subculture/ lifestyle.

Delegates will then be able to:

  • Support victims in reporting hate crimes/incidents to the police through existing reporting channels.
  • Raise awareness within their existing networks of what hate crime means.
  • Give local people confidence to report hate crimes/incidents
  • Signpost victims to support organisations.
