Who is this course for?
The foundation level course is a one-day course. It is suited to all professionals, including those outside of health and social care who want to grow their understanding and confidence in responding to someone who may be vulnerable to suicide and or self-harm. It has been developed for people with no or minimal experience and training in suicide and self-harm prevention. It covers the foundation knowledge and skills to respond and work towards safety with someone in distress and aligns with NICE Guideline [NG225] on self-harm for professionals from other sectors.
Through a combination of observation and focused skills practice, participants will develop practical, evidence-based strategies for providing compassionate support, including working towards safety, sharing information for safety, and handing over for additional support.
Course aim
The aim of the foundation course is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to:
- Notice warning signs and vulnerabilities associated with self-harm and suicide
- Listen compassionately,
- Recognise when and how to ask about suicide and self-harm.
